hi
When ever i visit some sites
they have these stupid commercials which start playing . I do not want to see them. and wish there were a way to stop them.  

Answer

1- Install a good pop up blocker

Yahoo's toolbar and google's toolbar has them and they are pretty effective.
Yahoo's toolbar has an additional advantage of including a good spyware detector.

Both can be downloaded from their respective sites...

This will ensure if the content starts in a seperate pop up window , it won't start at all.


Other wise the general setting for allowing /disallowing the  multimedia content in you IE is in the multimedia section of the Advanced configrations.


Tools--->> internet options then click the Advanced tab..

Browse down to the multimedia section

and uncheck  appropritatly..

ie you can uncheck the play sound, play animation and play video ( three different options ) from this section
