Hi Lorry
this is getting embarassing!
Thanks for that link but I had found it before and it simply doesn't work with my version of IE 6.0.2900.2180
I'll just have to do it by hand or put up with the jumble!

Thanks for the very quick reply but it didn't fix it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the addresses in favourites remain in the order they were added I'm afraid. Seems to be insoluble, or is it?

I have IE version 6.0.2900.2180 and would like to be able to list favourites in alphabetical order.
All I can find tells me to right click on the list and then click on 'sort by name'.........but this does not appear on the drop down list. I note this has been asked several times before ..............is there no solution? I don't want to use version 7 /

Hi David,
Go to Start, Programs, right click Internet Explorer, then left click Sort by name.
Hope this helps!

Hi David,
Alphabetize Your Favorites
If your list of Favorites gets unruly, you can put it in alphabetical order.
1.Right-click anywhere on the Favorites menu.
2.On the menu that opens, click Sort by Name. See step 2 in the image below.
Internet Explorer 6 lists folders first (if you have them), and then individual Web pages in the main list.
From:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/using/howto/share/favorites.mspx#E4D
Perhaps you are seeing the folders first?
Hope this helps!

Hi David,
Have you checked for spyware and/or viruses? That's the only other thing I can think of, because the right clicking and choosing Sort by Name has worked since IE5 to alphabetize the Favorites List.
I would suggest downloading Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4, a program that removes spyware, available from:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262,00.asp
Check for updates before running. If you have trouble getting the updates, near the top of the Update Window, click the little arrow next See-Cure #1(Europe), highlight the next one on the list, See-Cure #2 and try to download the updates. If that doesn't work, try the next one the list. until you get one you can download from. Being a free program, if too many people are using the same site to download the updates, some people will not get them.
Using Iternet Explorer, go to:
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym
Click the GO button, then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes.
Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to:
http://www.symantec.com/search/ and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestions Lorry; I have both a virus programme and a spy ware checker.
Browsing back in the archives under 'alphabetize' it seems this is a problem not peculiar to me. The option 'sort by name' simply won't come up!!
Thanks for your efforts.
David
AnswerHi David,
Did you update the anti-spyware program before scanning? What one program misses, the other usually catches.
The last resort would be to repair or reinstall IE6. Check out the following for information:

Hope this helps!
