Question Hi, thanks for being available here. I use both IE and Firefox. In IE 7, I get a message when I try to bring up any page that says, "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage."
That message is followed by likely causes and has a diagnostic. The diagnostic tells me my connectivity is fine. Nevertheless, I can't get online. In Firefox, I receive no error message, just a white screen.
I can access my Yahoo Instant Messenger, and I receive alerts from gmail when I have new email (web based), but I can not open a web browser to check my email. (I don't use Outlook).
I disabled my PC Tools and Windows firewalls, but no change. But just a few minutes ago, Yahoo Messenger stopped working until I re-disabled my firewalls.
I have an IP address and I am definitely connected to the internet, but neither browser works. I uninstalled both of them and reinstalled (from a disk made from my laptop) and still nothing. Also, and only in firefox, all of my bookmarks are wiped out.
What is going on and how do I get this restored. By the way, System Restore was of no help.
Thanks!
Answer Tough one. You have pretty much done everything I would suggest and pretty much everything you can do but to be sure......
1) System Restore back further and check the dates of programs installed.
2) Check Task Manager and end tasks one by one that you are using and try IE after each one. Make a note incase.
3) Last resort completely delete your firewall not disable it.
If all this fails i would suggest PC Doctor or registry fixer, only as a last resort. If this fails it looks like a re format. Sounds like either a virus or the registry has been corrupted, if the registry is messed up you dont have many options left to you.
