The problem I'm having is when using a modem dialup, the first page loads fine after the usual wait, (about a minute) BUT, then I have to wait 2-4 minutes before the next page loads? After that the pages load normally. It doesn't matter which IP I use either... the same with all six I've tried.

Is there a setting I can use to fix this or?

I have the Explorer version 6.0
I'm using XP Pro OP, PIII 1000 cpu, 640 ram memmory.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jack,

With Internet Explorer opened, go to Tools, Internet Options, under the General tab click Delete Cookies, Delete Temporary Files and change the numberof days to keep History to 3, instead of the default 20. Click App;y, then OK.

If your Internet connection is slower than normal, any of the following might be the cause.

1. The time of day can affect how fast the Internet feels. When more people are connected and the Internet carries more traffic, it becomes slower. This is particularly true if only certain websites are affected.

2. Slow connections can be caused by noise on your telephone line, which forces the modem to connect at a slower rate to compensate. If you can hear static or other noise on your telephone, contact your telephone company.

3. Slow connections can become more common during heavy rain, as moisture enters telephone lines through cracks or flaws in the plastic shield and causes line noise. Your connections should return to normal after the line dries out.

4. Slow connections can become more common during the spring and fall, as temperatures change and telephone lines adjust, frozen moisture in the line thaws and dries out, etc. Your connections should return to normal after the line has adjusted to the environment.

5. Software which uses your Internet connection to place weather updates, stock tickers, banner ads, etc. on your desktop may be using too much of your bandwidth. If you have any such software installed, try disabling it.

6. Your computer operating system may be erratic. Shutting down your computer and restarting may help.

7. Your computer may be infected by a virus or worm which is using your Internet connection to spread itself. Your MN Dialup email is automatically filtered for viruses, we also suggest that you use an anti-virus program to protect your computer against viruses and worms from other sources.

8. Your hard drive may be full or require defragmenting. Web browsers in particular are usually configured to keep a cache of recently accessed web pages on your hard drive, and as the hard drive fills up it becomes difficult for the web browser to do so efficiently. Removing unnecessary files and programs from your hard drive to free space or or using a hard drive defragmenting program may help.

9. Your modem driver (the software which helps your computer communicate with your modem) or modem may be faulty. Updating your modem driver may help. Modem driver updates can often be downloaded from the manufacturer's website or from DriverGuide.com.

10. Your computer operating system may be faulty. System files can become corrupted over time, especially if your computer has locked up or been shutdown improperly, and interfere with the computer's ability to maintain
an Internet connection.

Hope this helps!

Hi Lorry,

Thanks for taking the time to help.

Here is where I'm at on your 10 points.

1. I delete my cookies, files & history everytime I'm done with that site.
2. It doesn't matter what time of the day, it is the same everytime.
3. Same as #2 it is the same everytime.
4. Same as #2 it is the same everytime.
5. very little software, my tray has only one thing in it.
6. Same as #2 it is the same everytime.
7. I run my virus scanner everyday and it is updated.
8. I defrag everyweek and my HD is 3/4 empty.
9. My modem is updated and is working fine.
10. I'm running WinXP Home and it runs everything else well.

I have a 40GB HD, PIII 1000 cpu, with 640 ram memmory.

Still the same problem: Loads first website in normal time, takes 2-4 minutes before the next page loads? After that all pages load okay. I've tried 5 different IP's and same problem. I can understand maybe the first website taking awhile, BUT NOT the second one and only the second one?

Thanks!
Jack

Answer
Hi Jack,

Asked my brother for help, he came back with:

Tough one!  He may run AnalogX's nsli -- a "speedometer" to see if the computer is reading anything when it seems to be idling.  But that won't explain WHY.

Beyond that I have no idea why this happening.

Later,
Lorry
