Microsoft Network (MSN) Q`s - MSN FAVORITES File Corrupted

Expert: viksra - 3/5/2008

Question
I can't delete old Favorites, or rather I can delete the unused ones but they keep reappearing.  I've talked to MSN Techs, emailed them, and with all they recommended NOTHING worked, I'm at the end of my rope!  Can YOU help?

Answer
Hey Lonnie. The following is from the MSN Public newsgroups, ( http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.... ), posted by a member of the MSNIA team late last year.

MSN identified two issues that were causing problems with favorites, and many customers may already be fixed.

The issues were:
- A change was needed on the servers that store the favorites files
- Each stored favorite has an ID associated with it and some of these IDs were getting corrupted.  Once a corrupted favorites file was on the server, any changes made on the local machine were not being properly recorded on the server.

If you were having issues with favorites, please try organizing them again.

If the problem was strictly with the server, then your favorites should now work fine.  If the problem persists, then the issue may be corrupted IDs and there is a solution available for download.

We have created a tool that cleans up the corrupted IDs and uploads the corrected version to the server.  This fix only replaces the corrupted IDs and does not touch the links themselves, so no data is lost during the process.

XP and Vista users:
The tool needs to be run under an Administrator account

Win98/Win ME users:
The computer must have the latest updates available from windows update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)

If using MSN Dial-up, scroll down and read the “Special Instructions for Dial-up Customers” before running the tool.

1) Download the tool from http://autoupdate.msn.com/fixcorruptfavs.hta
2) Close MSN on all computers prior to running the fix *
3) Launch fixcorruptfav.hta
4) Enter the appropriate user name and password **
5) Click the “Click here…” button
5a) Once the fixed favorites have been uploaded to the server, a “Successful” message will appear.
5b) If an error message displays, verify that the internet connection is working and try again.  If the error reoccurs, note the message number and contact support by doing the following:
    1. Sign into MSN
    2. Go to https://support.msn.com
    3. Under Subscribed Services/Sign In, select MSN Premium Internet Software
    4. Under the Technical Support link, click E-mail.
    5. Please include the following
         a. The msn account name(s) that received the error
         b. The error number that was displayed
* If another computer is running MSN at the time the fix is uploaded, it might overwrite the fixed version that is on the server.  Once the corrected favorites have been uploaded, launching MSN  on the other computer will automatically download the updated file.

** The tool fixes the file for just the username that is entered.  If there are multiple affected accounts, run the tool  separately for each account.

Special Instructions for Dial-up Customers
In order for the favorites file to be corrected and uploaded to the server, there needs to be a connection to the Internet, but MSN cannot be running. Fortunately, MSN Connection Center can be run separately from the MSN Explorer.

Instructions for running MSN Connection Center without launching MSN Explorer:
1) Close MSN
2) Locate the MSN Connection Center icon (CC) in the lower right hand system tray.
3) Right-click the CC icon and select Exit
4) Go to the Start Menu - Programs - MSN Connection Center (or run %program files%\msn\msnia\cc\msncc\msncc.exe)
5) The CC sign-in screen will appear instead of the MSN sign-in screen.  (If the MSN sign-in screen, appears,  please close it, exit CC from the system tray and try again.)
6) Enter the email address and password, and click Sign In.
7) If prompted to create a new location, use the email address of the MSN primary account.
8) Once the connection has been established, the MSN Connection Center toolbar will display.
9) Once the favorites tool has been run, CC can be disconnected by either clicking the toolbar button or by right-clicking the CC system tray icon and selecting Disconnect.

This fix was made possible due to the assistance we got from folks in the newsgroup who graciously volunteered to help us with researching the issue, and beta testing the fix.  I thank each one of them for their efforts.

All the Best,

Berit Benson
