Microsoft Network (MSN) Q`s - Backing up e-mail before reformatting hard drive

Expert: Frances Rhea - 12/4/2007

Question
I've just switched over to MSN and have imported my e-mail from AOL.  Before I delete anything from AOL, I want to make sure I back up my e-mail account (the MSN one with all the imported e-mails).  I'm a newbie to MSN and to a lot of
computer stuff.  Can you tell me how to back up my e-mail accounts?  Thanks very much for your help!  (BTW, you are the 3rd volunteer I've contacted with this question, only to be told by the other 2 after more than a few days that they couldn't help.  I hope you can tell me if it's possible or not.  I did it with my old AOL, but can't remember how.  Thanks again.)

Answer
I am assuming that you are using the MSN Browser and a MSN or hotmail email address.

My question is: Are you using Windows Live services? If you are, then copying all of your emails is as simple as a right click on the folder you want to copy, and then Save As. Choose the location you want the backup stored, and click OK.

If you are not using the Live services, then the only way it can be done is if you retrieve the email into Outlook Express. Then you can copy any or all of the *.dbx files created into a different backup folder. (Do a search for *.dbx on your computer to find them.)

Hope this helps.

Fran
