Microsoft Network (MSN) Q`s - Hibernate/Standby/Shutdown?

Question
Thank you for the information.  I do most of those things now, but it's reassuring to know what I'm doing is OK and not subjecting my computer to viruses and such, even though I run McAfee.  As for reinstalling MSN, I'm unclear about how to do that without losing my saved folders and e-mails in them.  Do I go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and remove it there?  I know I can back up all my MSN e-mails, just in case, but I also have my Verizon e-mail address imported automatically into my MSN home page.  It comes into its own Verizon box.  I am able to visit the Verizon-dedicated website every week or so and delete all the e-mails from there, but those I've saved as they come in to the MSN side do not get deleted (this is a good thing!).  I know you can't be an expert on every ISP and how msgs are backed up and/or saved and/or recovered, so it's not a big problem if you aren't familiar with Verizon/MSN.  I can always find a way to save or export e-mails, but I really would like to know the correct way to uninstall/reinstall MSN.  I'm new to AllExperts, but I've found the answers I've perused here have a lot more info than any Tech Support I've experienced -- and I haven't even gotten past the MSN Qs yet!!  BIG THANKS for your generosity and willingness to share your knowledge.  Katy

PS:  Is there a difference in meaning between RAM and DDRAM?  Now that I know you're such a big help, I'll probably be sending more Qs   =: }

-----Question-----
I've recently started putting my computer into Hibernate mode.  Otherwise, it seems to take forever to load my Start Menu programs (though they are pared down to the basics) and then even longer to load my MSN home page.  It is accessed via Verizon FIoS.  Any idea why it takes so long?  Is it trying to load all my Favorites and all my e-mails that are in folders?  I have a lot of Favorites and a lot of e-mails that are saved in folders I've created.  I have McAfee Security, run Windows XP, Svc Pk 2.  I also have Webroot Spy Sweeper in my start up menu.  I have a Pentium(R)4 CPU, running at 2.80 GHz, with a 160 GB hard drive and I have only used 32 GB of that.  I also have 512 MB RAM.   Would it be helpful to increase my RAM (or is it DDRAM??) I clean out temp and history files at least every other day, defrag regularly, use CCleaner, Cleanup and other programs to help me do that since no one task seems to get them all. In addition, when I'm in MSN, I often get the message "MSN has encountered a problem and needs to shut down."  It's very frustrating.  Any ideas?
-----Answer-----
Hey Katy. Your computer specs are fine. Hibernate mode will make everything load up quicker than when you do a shutdown because what hibernate mode does is save the current state of everything that is on your computer into memory, and completely powers off. So, the next time you go to power on from hibernate mode, everything will load up instantly from memory. When you do a shutdown, the computer powers off completely like hibernate mode, but it does not save everything to memory like hibernate mode does. It is best to use shutdown after a few days of using hibernate, so that way you can refresh your computers memory. Sometimes after using a few days of hibernate mode, you will notice that some windows will behave strangely or will not update. This can be fixed by doing a simple shutdown and restart. Standby mode, unlike hibernate and shutdown, puts your computer in a low-power state and returns back to what you were doing when you take it out of standby. With the current amount of memory that you have, it's not necessary to increase it, however, adding more memory is never a bad thing. When you defrag, make sure that you close all applications. Defrag moves files around and organizes them, and running defrag with applications open could result in errors because the applications use files to run. If you continue to receive that error in MSN even after not running defrag while running MSN, a simple solution would be to reinstall MSN. That seems to take care of most problems quickly.

Answer
Hey Katy. Yes, you should be able to just go to Add/Remove Programs and remove it from there. The uninstaller should ask you whether or not you'd like to keep user created files, at which point you'd select yes. If I were you, I would back up all of the e-mails just as you said, just to be safe. Also, check the "C:\Program Files\MSN" directory to see if any bookmarks are saved there. I don't believe any would be saved there.

SDRAM: Short for Synchronous DRAM (168 pins). DDRAM: Short for Double Data Rate-Synchronous DRAM (184 pins). Each won't fit in the memory socket of the other so there is no chance of installing an SDRAM with a DDRAM or vice versa as it won't fit the socket. That's what you have to look out for when buying new memory.
