Microsoft Network (MSN) Q`s - Hibernate or shut down????

Expert: Frances Rhea - 1/28/2007

Question
First of all, THANK YOU for the quick response and valuable info.  I have a Pentium(R)4 CPU, running at 2.80 GHz, with a 160 GB hard drive and I have only used 32 GB of that.  I also have 512 MB RAM.  Are you saying that the loading speed might improve if I increase the RAM?  I clean out temp and history files at least every other day, defrag regularly, use CCleaner, Cleanup and other programs to help me do that since no one task seems to get them all.

As for my modem, it's a FIoS connection and the modem is either off or on -- no Standby option.  By going off-line without completely signing out of my MSN program (which, I think -- but may be wrong) SEEMS to effectively stops transmittal and put it into Standby mode.  Is that correct??

I really really really appreciate your help.  I stumbled onto this website by mistake (one of those serendipitous things) and have learned more and gotten more direct, concise and valuable info than from any other sites I've tried.

I will try the other suggestions you gave me for helping speed things up, too.

I'm sure you must have great karma!! Rebecca

-----Question-----
Is there any reason not to put my computer in the Hibernate mode after I've signed off my Verizon FIoS/MSN connection?  It seems to take forever to load from Shut Down, even though I've removed all but a few programs from the start up menu.  It takes an equally long (or longer) time to then load my MSN (from which I access my Verizon acct).  Any idea why it takes so long?  Is it trying to load all my Favorites and all my e-mails that are in folders?  The slow start up/load time is the basis of my question.  I'm trying to save some start up time and Hibernate appears to be a logical option, though I'm not sure if it's safe.  I have McAfee Security, run Windows XP, Svc Pk 2.  I also have Webroot Spy Sweeper in my start up menu.  Thank you for any insights!

Speed can also include things like how large your harddrive is and how full it is. Also how much memory you have and what processor speed. It can also include the health of your system files. That you can do something about quickly by clicking Start, Run. Type in 'sfc /scannow' and click OK. When it is done, reboot and see if that helped.

If your system hardware is adequate, it could be you need to clean up your temp files on your computer. You can do this manually by typing in file combinations and then search for those files, or you can look at this program:

http://www.thejackol.com/2004/06/01/drive-cleanup-wizard/

If you use it, just make sure you know what you are deleting. Send them to a separate folder and make sure your valuable programs work. If not restore the file they need. Then you can permanently delete the rest of the junk. (By the way, it is freeware.)

As for the Hibernate or Shut Down, Hibernate is fine and some consider better for your computer. I would make sure that I put my modem on Standby so that it does not transmit when you are not using the computer. (On my modem there is a button that when pushed sets the mode to Standby. Yours probably does too.)

Hope this helps.

Fran

Answer
Sounds like your computer should be in good health. If you tend to install and then uninstall programs, you might want to get a registry cleaner. Here is a free one:

As for the hibernate with MSN, I'm not sure. I use avast! antivirus (freeware) and it tells me when someone is trying to access my computer with an attack. If your virus scanner does not do this, I would suggest getting rid of it and replacing it with this one from www.avast.com.

Hope this has helped.

Fran
P.S. You're welcome for the help. My karma is good.
