Aboutviksra Expertise Howdi! I am viksra (yes, it is a lower-case letter- hehe). I can answer any, and I mean ANY question that is MSN related or deals with MSN. I can answer questions on (including, but not limited to):
MSN People & Groups
- MSN Chat
- MSN Groups
- MSN Messenger
- MSN Spaces
- MSN Member Directory
Other MSN & Windows Live Services
- MSN Money
- MSN Gaming Zone
- MSN Health
- MSN Billing
- MSN.com
- MY MSN (personalized version of MSN.com)
- MSN Partners
- MSN Hotmail
- Windows Live Mail
...and many other useful services that MSN/Windows Live has to offer! I can also answer Microsoft related questions, but not as well as I can answer MSN related questions!
I've seen you have previously answered a similar problem to mine, however the problem has persisted in this instance.
I own two wireless routers. One is rather more antique and enables me to run all internet ready software on my computer trouble-free, but I cannot set up WEP encryption with it (long story). This is obviously irritating, as I worry about others' stealing our signal. The other router I own is a Belkin 54 g, which is extremely efficient, a lot quicker and also enables me to use WEP encryption on my network. However I cannot, despite trying everything I can possibly think of, sign into msn. Every time I receive error 80048820.
I have tried opening the ports for msn in the virtual server menu. I have tried regsvr32 for all the relevant dlls i have found listed on other pages. I have switched off the router firewall (and my own firewall for that matter!). I have also tried checking the system clock to make sure it's correct (although god knows why it wouldn't be) and still no luck.
I'm now at a loss - I want to use this (rather expensive) router as I am irritated at not being able to encrypt my signal on my other router, but as a regular user of msn this problem is proving infuriating. If you have any advice it would be appreciated, Belkin technical support were useless.
Thanks.
Toby
Answer Hey Toby. I took this solution straight from Microsoft MVP Jonathan Kay. He suggests that the problem can be resolved by doing one of the following:
1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.
2. If your password information is not saved, verify that you are typing it in with the
correct case (uppercase or lowercase).
3. Change your password @ https://login.passport.com/ChangePW.srf to
something smaller (under 10-12 characters), then try signing in again.
4. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security etc. ), it's possible
that Messenger doesn't have the correct rights to access the Internet, especially since you
upgraded. You may need to re/add Messenger to the allowed list of programs in your firewall
if this is the case.
5. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger -- try
restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a problem (even if it is disabled).
6. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the
Delete Cookies button.
7. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check
for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL
3.0' is checked, then click OK.
8. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK
and do the same for the following:
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
