Microsoft Outlook - transfering outlook e-mails to a jump drive

Expert: Nancy Janyszeski - 5/24/2009

Question
I am wanting to know how to transfer my e-mail in (Microsoft outlook) that I have saved on my hard drive to a jump drive.  I have a lot and have been doing them one by one.

Answer
Jim, you can export your inbox and subfolders into several formats.

From the File menu > Import/Export and then determine the format.

If you want to simply read the emails you can use an Excel spreadsheet but their is a limit to the number of characters.

You can export in a CSV which is a Windows delimited format

When you use the Import/Export feature you will be given the option of where to export to and you will select you jump drive.

You can also export in a *pst format which will be the most comprehensive but you cannot import a 2007 file into a lessor version like 2003.

You can export in more than one version if you are not sure.

Nancy.
