Microsoft Outlook - winmail.dat files

Expert: Nancy Janyszeski - 6/27/2009

Question
Whenever someone using Microsoft Outlook as their email server sends me an email with attachments I have problems.  I can read the body of their email but the attachments come through as "winmail.dat" and I cannot open them.  What can I do?  It is imperative that I can read emails from these people as they are work related.

Thank you

Answer
Scott, the sender needs to send the attachments in a different format.  I have seen this and I also cannot open a *.dat file.

They need to open the file and save as a Word, Winword, text ect. file.

Have you asked the sender what the file is and what application is creating it and how they are attaching to the e-mail?

Nancy
