Answer As you have already found out, Norton was the cause of your problem, specifically Norton's Internet firewall. You may be able to open up Norton's firewall configuration and lower the settings. However, while this may allow you to send and receive email, it does not fix the problem.
Norton does have a fix for this problem. You will need to go to their on-line support and advise them of the problem. They should then send you a fix for the problem.
I had so many problems with Norton bugs that I removed it and purchased ZoneAlarm Internet Suite. I haven't had a problem since.
