Microsoft Publisher - MS Publisher Graphic Import

Expert: Dawn Douglas - 11/5/2008

Question
I have a Mac based Ill. eps file that I created. (If needed, I can convert it to just
about anything in Photoshop...tiff, eps, gif, jpg, etc) I need to get the graphic
into a friends PC based MS Publisher document. The graphic is simply solid
black and we want it to maintain a transparent or clear background (no white
around it) Can you help? Thanks, Jerry

Answer
Hi Jerry,

I understand your problem, it's happened to me many times before. My image looks great in my graphic program, but when I import it into my publication, horror!

Here are a few suggestions:

First, for print the transparency for GIF or PNG will not work. Web, yes, for print no. If you have photoshop, use the Export Transparent Image Wizard located under the Help menu. It will ask you a series of questions and export the image in the appropriate format.

If that doesn't work...

Since you cannot use PSD or a EPS in Publisher, your only other option is alpha channels, which are bitmap masks that define transparency in shades of gray. You can set the transparency through the alpha channel or mask then save the image as a TIFF and import it into Publisher.

If that doesn't work...you have a final option that is probably least desirable.

Within Microsoft Publisher on the picture tool bar there is an option to set your transparency color. When you put the image into the Publisher Document (GIF, PNG, TIFF etc...), select it and the picture tool bar should enable. It is the second to the last tool listed. Place the tool on the white portion of the picture and it will make that portion transparent. Unfortunately, unlike more professional graphic programs it will not allow you to set variable degrees of transparency. But for the most part it does the trick.

I hope that helps.

Very Respectfully,

Dawn
