Microsoft Word - Filename in footers

Expert: Richard Stephens - 8/19/2008

Question
Hi, Richard. Word2003. I am trying to set up a blank template with the filename in the footer. I have tried insert/field/filename into the footer, but it does not update when the document is saved. I have tried the settings to include the path and NOT to preserve sytles when updating, but it makes no difference. Am I missing something simple? If I am, can you please point me in the right direction. Regards  Graham

Answer

You have found a favorite pet peeve of many a word user.  You have two options, the first being to use the print preview button to update the file (make sure you have Update Fields selected in the Print tab in the Options dialog box, Tools > Options > Print).  This will change the path and name to the current one.

Another option is to create a macro like the one here.

Hope this helps.
