Microsoft Word/Numbers in Headings for Word 2007

Question
I am starting a large report and want a detailed table of contents.  I understand that Word 2007 does this real easily, if it's set up.  I understand I need to use headings, applied to each section I want in the TOC.  However, I have not figured out how to get the outline numbering to work inside the headings.  I used an internet help for Word 2003 and applied it to 2007 but the numbering would not start over in the next section.

Any ideas on how to make it work?  I got so far as to get about everything I wanted except the blasted numbers would not restart counting.  In the outline section it has a "start over" section to check.  I couldn't find it in the (right click) Headings (select) Modify section.  It continued counting very well but that is not what I need.  In other words, it's like this

I.
 A.
 B.
II.
 C.
 D.

I just want it to go like this
I,
 A,
 B,
II,
 A,
 B, etc .

Any help? I hope this is not too much to ask.

Answer
You need to set up outline numbering as described at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html Although the process is a little different in Word 2007, the principles are the same. If your headings are correctly numbered, the TOC will be correct as well.

When/if you get into trouble with the paragraph numbering, post a question in the microsoft.public.word.numbering newsgroup (link below) at msnews.microsoft.com. The latter is a public news server hosted by Microsoft for peer-to-peer support of all its hardware and software products. There are several dozen NGs devoted to Word alone; all are read by many knowledgeable users, and most questions are answered (usually correctly) within a few hours or even minutes (though occasionally it takes days).

Expertise

I've been using Word for Windows since version 2.0 (1992), and the more I learn about it, the more I realize how little I know. But I may know a few things that you don't, and I'll help if I can. I answer many questions every day in Microsoft's peer support forums and as a result have been awarded the MVP (Most Valuable Professional) designation by Microsoft Corporation. You may be able to find the answer to your question at the Word MVPs' FAQ site or at my own Word FAQ site, so please check those first! Please, no questions about VBA (macros), Registry editing, networks, or complex merges, as I have no experience with these aspects of Word, nor do I have any experience with Word for Mac. Please indicate which version of Word you are using; if you are not sure, see "What version of Word do I have?".

Experience

I have a master's degree in classics (Latin), which is surprisingly helpful, though I no longer teach. The things I am proudest of: Having raised two children to maturity, both Merit Scholars, both college graduates (one a philosophy major!), one Phi Beta Kappa (from Harvard!); having been made a Paul Harris Fellow by my Rotary club; having been designated a Microsoft MVP.
