Anne,
  I have look through all the documentation and help menus I have to find out what this solid small 1/8 inch square that appears on some of my documents at the extreme left is.
  It seems to be an "Anchor" which I have been able to delete some, but not all, by going to View, Print Layout, selecting and hitting Delete key.
  Is there some magic I can use to get rid of the remaining "Anchors."

This sounds to me like the square that indicates that there is paragraph formatting on the paragraph following the square.
