Microsoft Word - numbering pages on document when forgotten at the beginning

Expert: Pamela Mullenix-Croft - 10/28/2009

Question
I have began a document and I forgot to have each page numbered. Is there a way to go back and number my pages?

Thank you

Answer
Hello Earl,

Yes, you can add page numbers at any time in Word. If you are using Word 2002/2003 follow these steps for the page numbers:

To Add Basic Page Numbers – or to Add Page X of Y page numbers (example: Page 2 of 4)

•   Click the View menu at the top  of the Word window

•   Select Header and Footer from the menu

•   Decide if you want the page numbers to appear at the top of the page of the bottom. If you want them to appear at the top, go to the next step. If you want them to appear at the bottom, then first move to the toolbar which appeared when you click on Header and Footer from the View menu. Next, move to the picture on the toolbar which looks like a piece of paper with two yellow/gold bars; one of the bars at the top and one at the bottom. This is called the Switch Between Header and Footer button.

•   Next, on both cases, to add a simple numbering system (example: Page 2), click the Insert Page Number button on the toolbar which appears on the page when you go to the Header and Footer command. The button looks like a piece of paper with a crosshatch on it

•   To add Page X of Y numbers (example: Page 2 of 4), click the Insert AutoText button on the Header and Footer toolbar

•   Select Page X of Y

•   Click the word Close on the Header and Footer toolbar

You can always return to the Header and Footer command and change the alignment or look of the page numbers if you wish.

If you are using Word 2007, you would move to the Insert tab at the top of the Word window, and select Page Number, and choose the option for Top of the Page or Bottom of the Page. The alignment can be selected at the same time you insert the page number.

I hope this helps.

Best regards,
Pamela
