Microsoft Word - restarting footnote numbering

Expert: Mahesh - 10/22/2009

Question
I am trying to restart the footnote numbering for only one section. The section is in my appendices and is a manual.  The footnotes for the manual need to be separate from the main paper. I have section breaks for each chapter in the main paper to help with page number formatting.

Answer
Hi David,

Since I am not sure about the version of Ms Word you are using, I will give you a generic answer.

When you insert a footnote, you get a dialog box where you choose various options for the footnote you are about to enter.  in that same dialog box there will be a drop down to specify the type of numbering the footnote should follow.  If you check the drop-down list, you will see an option "Restart at every section".  You will have to choose this option to make your footnote start at one in every section.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Mahesh K
