Microsoft Word - outlining

Expert: Mahesh - 11/4/2009

Question
I have Microsoft Office Word 2007, and whenever I outline I use the multilevel list option. Usually when I hit enter to go to the next line and press tab, the next bullet/number or whatever format symbol appears for the next list level. However, for some reason on this computer that I am using when i press tab, it only indents and does not automatically change the list level. I can still do it manually by clicking the "change list level" option, but is there a way to change it so that it does it automatically when I hit tab? I use Microsoft Office Word 2007 on other computers and it does it automatically.
Thank you,
Katie

Answer
Hi Katie,

This is one of the autocorrect feature of MSWord which formats the numbered paragraphs with "tab" and "backspace" keys.  To enable this feature you need to go to the "Auto correct option" menu and select appropriate option to activate it.

Go to the office button on the left top corner and click on "Word Options" button. On the left hand side of the box select "proofing" from the list.  You will then have to click on the "Autocorrect options.." button which you will see on your screen. Once you click it you will get the autocorrect options dialog box.  On the top, click on the tab "Autoformat as you type".  In this tab, at the bottom you will see an option "Set left- and first-indents with tabs and backspaces".  Enable this option and you will get what you wanted.

Remember, this setting is user specific.  So when you open the same document on another computer, you will have to make the changes as I have mentioned in that computer as well.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Mahesh K
