Microsoft Word/problem with Mail Merge

Question
hi Nancy, how are you?

I use Word 2007 and Word 2010, with Windows 7.

Moving through the Mail Merge steps, using the Wizard, I get to the point where the screen highights "Browse". I bring an Excel database onto the screen, click and a message appears:

Error has occurred: External table is not in the expected format

There are buttons to click on this screen, but they lead to other screens that are way beyond me, requiring the know-how of a techie or programmer or ??

the odd thing about this matter is THE ABOVE PROBLEM OCCURS ONLY IN WORD 2010; I SEE NO PROBLEM WHEN WORKING IN WORD 2007!!

Can you help?

thanks

Chris
