Microsoft Word/i don't have a clever name for this one

hello Michelle!

I use Windows 7. I have loaded both Word 2010 and Word 2013.
I am using a book in the Step-by-Step series, for Word 2013. The book instructs me on how to download practice files. They are zip files and I followed the instructions.
The problem:
In Windows Explorer, when I click on a zip file that is located in the Word 2013 folder, the file opens in Word 2010  and not in Word 2013!
If I open Word 2013 and try to open the zip file, I see a message telling me that the file cannot be found or opened or what-have-you.
Do I have to remove my Word 2010 from my computer, in order to open the 2013 zip files in Word 2013? That is a nuisance.

I look forward to your reply.

Hi Chris,

Extract your files to the desktop or other location (do not open from a zipped file). It does not matter where the zip file is located, by default files will open to the first version of Word installed. To overcome this, open version you would like to work in (2013 in this case) and then open the unzipped file and it will open within that version of Office. I deal with the same thing because I have multiple versions of Office on my computer and this works for me with Word.

If you need to open PowerPoint 2013, you will need to open PPT 2013 and go to File > Open and choose the file. If you launch the file it will automatically default to first version installed even if 2013 is open.

Hope this was helpful.
