This appears to be a very irritating feature with Word that Microsoft have never got round to fixing as far as I can tell and I have not figured out what causes it to occur.

To correct the issue you shouldn't have to mess around with normal.dot or reconfiguring Word in any way etc.; simply alter the zoom size of your document by zooming out and back in using the Zoom dropdown toolbar and the cursor should be restored to your current point size.

Try to play with the zoom. Seems to be a rendering problem

Try this.

To make your cursor larger

Hold the Ctrl&Shift key, then press the > until you get the size you feel comfortable with.

Enjoy. . . .

I too had this problem and could find no help in Office>Word>Help.  So, I went searching the net.  I had a smaller cursor and the zoom theory worked for me.  Thanks.

My cursor was small and I went to 500% then back to 100% and it fixed it!  Thanks so much for this tip!

Dear All...

Just Zoom to 500% and then back to 100% and it fixes it. very simple.

Thanks

This did not work in my case. What did work was the following.

Close all instances of Word.

Check with Task Manager for any still active instances of Word.

There was one in my case!

Kill it with Task Manager.

Problem solved.

Hi i had the same problem.  every time i open a .dot template my cursor size shrinks to half while it stays full on other word documents.. Zoomed to 500% ENTER, back to 100% ENTER.  took care of it.  A lotta lotta thanks.

If you change the zoom to 10% in word 2003 and then close the document . It stores the cursor size as the one which it uses for 10% zoom. Then in 100% zoom you will see the cursor as a dot. This can be irritating and you might be wondering how to fix it.

Here are simple steps to fix this thing.

1) Shut down Microsoft Word.

2) Go to Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

3) Open the Normal.dot file and change the zoom to the one which you currently have in Word 2003

4) Your cursor is back to normal. Enjoy :) .

Those of us who have modified out normal.dot (to give sane margins and sane fonts, for example) cannot use the out-of-the-box normal.dot.

The onliest way I've found so far is to fix my modified normal.dot, add a toolbar, save and exit. Open again, remove the toolbar, and save and exit again.

Years ago I had found the actual fix for this problem, but now everyone seems to just point to zoom and zoom. That is NOT a fix; it is a workaround.
