About Bill Taylor
Expertise
I can answer questions about admissions to West Point; about the history of West Point; about how to travel to West Point, where to eat, where to stay, etc.; and about West Point`s alumni organization, the West Point Association of Graduates.

Experience
I am a 1970 Graduate of West Point. I served six years on active duty and another 8 years in the active reserve. I have been actively involved as a Field Admissions Representative for over 15 years and have participated on my Congressman's Academy Selection Panel for over 20 years. I am actively involved in West Point Alumni affairs, serving in roles both with the West Point Association of Graduates and the local alumni chapter in Annapolis, MD. I also have two sons who graduated from West Point in 1995 and 2001. Both are veterans of the Iraq war and continue to serve on Active Duty in the Army.

Question
Our grandson has an appointment to West Point and we are so pleased he elected to go.  My question is during the six weeks' basic training, will he be allowed to phone home?  Also, what is the procedure after completion of the six weeks.  Thank you for your answers.

Answer
Hi, Peggy, it's great to hear from you.  Congratulations on your grandson's appointment to West Point.

The six weeks of Cadet Basic Training (CBT) are indeed arduous, both for the new cadet AND their family.  Yes, they will be allowed to make a few phone calls on weekends.  At some time by the completion of CBT they will be allowed a visit by family on a Saturday afternoon and Sunday.  The exact timing of that visitation weekend varies from year to year, but rest assured that the Academy will provide plenty of notice so that your family can plan accordingly.

At the completion of CBT the new cadets are then accepted into the Corps of Cadets in an impressive parade on the Plain (parade ground).  Family is definitely welcome for that important ceremony.  After that the fall academic semester starts and they are immersed in a comprehensive academic program.

Good luck to your grandson.

Best Regards,

Bill Taylor
