About Bill Taylor
Expertise
I can answer questions about admissions to West Point; about the history of West Point; about how to travel to West Point, where to eat, where to stay, etc.; and about West Point`s alumni organization, the West Point Association of Graduates.

Experience
I am a 1970 Graduate of West Point. I served six years on active duty and another 8 years in the active reserve. I have been actively involved as a Field Admissions Representative for over 15 years and have participated on my Congressman's Academy Selection Panel for over 20 years. I am actively involved in West Point Alumni affairs, serving in roles both with the West Point Association of Graduates and the local alumni chapter in Annapolis, MD. I also have two sons who graduated from West Point in 1995 and 2001. Both are veterans of the Iraq war and continue to serve on Active Duty in the Army.

US Military Academy at West Point - Army DEP to West Point

Expert: Bill Taylor - 10/3/2009

Question
I hope you are able to answer my question. Thanks for taking your time to answer. Well currently I am a junior at North Miami Senior High School. I am in the International Baccalaureate Program (IB)and also in the Army Rotc program. My question is, next year in April 14 i will be turning 17 years old making me eligible to sign up for the Army's DEP program go to basic training in the summer and come back my senior year enlisted in the Army. If i do this can i still go to West Point after i graduate from high school taking in consideration that i had joined the Army a year before. Can i apply to WP while being a senior in the Army? I hope i was clear in my question... Thank you once again!

Answer
It's good to hear from you, Victor.  Thanks for your interest in West Point.

Whether you know it or not, you have found a different but well tread path to admission to West Point.  Every year two hundred or more of the incoming class of 1300 or so come from the Army, the Army Reserves and the National Guard.  Those already in the service compete separately from everyone else coming out of High School.

So the simple answer to your question is that you can definitely apply to West Point from within the enlisted ranks of the Army/Reserve/Guard.  Check out the admissions website, and in particular the section for soldiers located at:

http://admissions.usma.edu/soldiers/default.cfm

Study that carefully and you should have most of the information you need to compete from within the ranks of Soldiers.

Good luck in your quest, Victor.

Best Regards,

Bill Taylor
