About Bill Taylor
Expertise I can answer questions about admissions to West Point; about the history of West Point; about how to travel to West Point, where to eat, where to stay, etc.; and about West Point`s alumni organization, the West Point Association of Graduates.
Experience I am a 1970 Graduate of West Point. I served six years on active duty and another 8 years in the active reserve. I have been actively involved as a Field Admissions Representative for over 15 years and have participated on my Congressman's Academy Selection Panel for over 20 years. I am actively involved in West Point Alumni affairs, serving in roles both with the West Point Association of Graduates and the local alumni chapter in Annapolis, MD. I also have two sons who graduated from West Point in 1995 and 2001. Both are veterans of the Iraq war and continue to serve on Active Duty in the Army.

Question
Hi Bill
I am searching for information on my gg grandfather. Attached is a photo of him. Is this a West Point cadet uniform? His daughter and son were born in 1890's and he may have served in the civil war. The family photograph says "Colonel Ethan Allen - My Father" written by Grace R Allen. His son was named Ethan E. Allen IV and served in WW1 from Cleveland Ohio. Could you tell me if a record at West Point exists for an Ethan Allen in the 19th century? May have been Ethan Edward Allen. Thanks so much for your help.
Answer It's good to hear from you, KB. Thanks for your interest in West Point. I apologize for the delayed response as I have been slammed with travel and work.
My primary source is the "Register of Graduates and Former Cadets of the US Military Academy," published annually by the West Point Association of Graduates. The "Register" lists only one "Ethan Allen" who graduated in the Class of 1806. This Ethan Allen, by the way, was the son of the famous Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen. Unfortunately this is many years ahead of the timeline of your Ethan Allen, so there is likely NOT a match.
In addition, the uniform in the picture, while similar to the West Point Full Dress Uniform, is different in significant ways, such as the double line of stitching across the chest buttons and the rounded corners on the collar. It is most likely NOT a West Point uniform.
I'm sorry the news isn't better, KB, but good luck in your quest.
Best Regards,
Bill Taylor
