About Bill Taylor
Expertise
I can answer questions about admissions to West Point; about the history of West Point; about how to travel to West Point, where to eat, where to stay, etc.; and about West Point`s alumni organization, the West Point Association of Graduates.

Experience
I am a 1970 Graduate of West Point. I served six years on active duty and another 8 years in the active reserve. I have been actively involved as a Field Admissions Representative for over 15 years and have participated on my Congressman's Academy Selection Panel for over 20 years. I am actively involved in West Point Alumni affairs, serving in roles both with the West Point Association of Graduates and the local alumni chapter in Annapolis, MD. I also have two sons who graduated from West Point in 1995 and 2001. Both are veterans of the Iraq war and continue to serve on Active Duty in the Army.

US Military Academy at West Point - Travel from Westpoint to NJ

Expert: Bill Taylor - 10/19/2009

Question
I have a nephew at Westpoint and he wants to come visit for a weekend. The closest Amtrack or NJ Transit train station to us is Hamilton Station in NJ.  What would be the best means of travel from Westpoint to the Hamilton Station?  I know how to travel from Penn Station to Hamilton.  It is just the leg from Westpoint to Penn Station I don't know.

Thanks

Answer
It's good to hear from you, Christine.  Thanks for your interest in West Point.  I apologize for the delayed response as I have been slammed with travel and work.

Unfortunately this is a tough problem, as I am not aware of any present day bus service to West Point and the closest train station is across the Hudson River.  That said, he can take a taxi from West Point to the Garrison or Cold Spring, NY train station; from there they take a train into New York City arriving at Grand Central Station; from there they take a taxi or navigate the subway across town to Penn Station; from Penn Station they can take the train you are aware of that goes to Hamilton, NJ.  This is a time consuming and complicated to get from West Point to you, with a complementary trip on return.

The best solution in my opinion is by car.  It IS possible for Cadets to rent cars from Stewart Airport in Newburgh, NY even though they are usually under the normal minimum rental age of 25.  Or, if you have a car and drive you could go get him.  It's about 90 miles, and a pretty straight shot up I-287 to I-87 to West Point via the Harriman, NY exit off of I-87.

I wish I could be more helpful, as there are no great options.  If you have any follow-up questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Good luck in meeting with your nephew.

Best Regards,

Bill Taylor
