About Bill Taylor
Expertise
I can answer questions about admissions to West Point; about the history of West Point; about how to travel to West Point, where to eat, where to stay, etc.; and about West Point`s alumni organization, the West Point Association of Graduates.

Experience
I am a 1970 Graduate of West Point. I served six years on active duty and another 8 years in the active reserve. I have been actively involved as a Field Admissions Representative for over 15 years and have participated on my Congressman's Academy Selection Panel for over 20 years. I am actively involved in West Point Alumni affairs, serving in roles both with the West Point Association of Graduates and the local alumni chapter in Annapolis, MD. I also have two sons who graduated from West Point in 1995 and 2001. Both are veterans of the Iraq war and continue to serve on Active Duty in the Army.

US Military Academy at West Point - Admission with Spinal Fusion

Expert: Bill Taylor - 9/11/2009

Question
Hello Bill,
Go Army!  I'm class of '82 and my daughter is interested in attending West Point.  However, she had scoliosis when she was younger and had to get surgery which included some spinal fusion.  She is very fit and would qualify both academically and physically.  She's a junior.  Do you know if USMA disqualifies for spinal fusion?  If so, is there chance of waiver?

Thanks,
Michael

Answer
It's good to hear from you, Michael.  Thanks for your interest in West Point on behalf of your daughter.

The simple answer is that I don't know the answer to your question regarding spinal fusion.  Given that, I would suggest that you do two things.  First I would get a copy of the standards and have your daughter's doctor review them and offer his opinion.  Start with

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/intmedstandards.htm

and find the relevant parts to print and share with her doctor.  Second, I would contact Admissions (845-938-4041), tell them where you live and ask to speak to your Regional Commander.  Tell them about your daughter's situation and ask their opinion.  They may or may not have a definitive answer, but you will have them on notice and thinking about your daughter's situation.  Their role is to get candidates qualified, so you should find them most helpful.

Good luck, Michael, in your quest on behalf of your daughter.

Best Regards,

Bill Taylor
