Question
Hi Bill:

I have some questions about the weighting among SAT I, II, and class rank.

Are SAT IIs required or recommended? How much do SATs weigh compared to class rank? And within what range is a good SAT score - one that will probably be offered admission?

Thank you

Answer
It's good to hear from you.  Sorry for the delay in responding as I was traveling.

The average SAT score for the incoming class of 2010 is in the area of 1285.  There is no absolute acceptable range, but that is the mean.  We in admissions don't have any definitive guidance yet regarding the SAT II.  While it is not requred at this time, it never hurts to take additional tests, especially if you score well.

Class rank has historically been the most reliable predictor of academic success at West Point.  That is because it measures actual performance against your peers in your high school situation as opposed to measuring with at test.  There are no comparison criteria, but understand that your performance against your peers counts for more than test scores, or GPA.

Good luck in your quest.
