The question itself shows how myopic and provincial the southern US see itself.  The term is used to describe ANYONE who is from the United States.  We are all Yanks, like it or not, so please don't split hairs or start getting offended.  Brits are British, Aussies are Australian, Canucks are Canadian, Kiwis are New Zealanders...etc.  We're Yanks, get used to it.  Nobody cares what we call ourselves from within our borders.
