Military History - British Military Tradition

Expert: Jim Saurman - 4/17/2008

Question
I've read that in World War 1 and prior, there was a tradition where the men of a unit, or those graduating from the same school, or member of the same club, would chip in together to buy an expensive bottle of alcohol.  The bottle would be saved until the sole survivor toasted to all his fallen comrads.  Do you know what this tradition is called?  There is also a painting of this tradition.

Answer
It's usually called the "Last Man's Club" and it still exists today but obviously not as often as it did in eras past.

You can also just google "Last Man Club" for more links.

Hope this helps,
