Question Last month, my grandson was mortally wounded by an IED in Afghanistan and will be interred in Arlington at the end of this month. I am a retired Air Force Officer and I would like to know if I may render arms at the ceremony although I will not be in uniform. What is proper under this circumstance? Thanks for your help
Answer Dear Dan,
First, let me extend my sympathies over the loss of your grandson in Afghanistan. You are allowed to wear your uniform with dress sword, scabbard, and belt and present a sword salute or hand salute. The use of a sidearm and/or rifle is not allowed. If you are wearing civilian clothes, then you may only render a hand salute. Again, please accept my condolences in your time of grief. May God Bless-Lt. Colonel Robert A. Lynn, Florida Guard
