Answer
Greetings

The best rifles of the 2nd World war were used long after the war.  The US M-1 Garand was one of the best rifles of the 2nd World War.  It was a semi automatic rifle with range and hitting power.  It was rugged and very reliable.  Being semiautomatic it allowed more fire power to be poured on targets from infantry.  The M-1 was developed into the M-14 rifle a great weapon that was too heavy and expensive for the US Army.

The German development of the assault rifle or Sturmgewehr is one of the most important developments to come out of the 2nd World War.  The assault rifle was designed for short range engagements.  Most rifles have range in thousands of yards.  Assault rifles use a smaller bullet but carry more of them and are just as deadly at shorter ranges.  The Sturmgewehr lead to the AK-47, the US M-14 and M-16 development.
The US did have a interesting weapon developed in World War One that can be seen as precursor to the assault rifle; it was called the BAR or Browning Automatic Rifle.  This squad machine gun was a huge advance and was used up to the Korean War.
The Thompson was again designed during World War 1.  It was designed to be a trench sweeper.  The war ended before it could be used in combat.  During the 1920s and 1930s it was updated and by the start of World war 2 it was a much more reliable weapon.  It was an expensive weapon and was replaced by the M-3 machine gun.  The M-3 was smaller lighter weight and made from pressed steel thus far cheaper to make.

I hope this helps in your research and check out the links

Thanks You.
