Military History - WWI SSI and Oversea service stripe

Expert: Alan F. Cagle - 2/7/2009

Question
LTC,
Sir My Grandfather is a WWI vet and I know that he was assigned to the 520th Motor Truck Company. I contacted the Quartermaster Researcher and he stated that he would have been assigned to 1st Army. I was wondering what would the "A" color be and do you have a picture. Now I know that a discharge stripe was Red and worn on the right sleeve and rank was a round disk with a wheel with a Mercury Helmet. My Grandfather spent from September 1918 to May 1919. What color would the oversea stripes be?

Answer
Luke...

I am enclosing a more complete reply to your question. John Vargas is the uniform/patch/insignia guy on the board. He agreed with me on the 3rd Army. Forgive John, he can be a little terse at times, but he knows his stuff. If we can help again, please contact me.

Good Hunting
Alan Cagle
