Military History - WWII US Navy uniform

Expert: John - 9/5/2009

Question
Was there ever a time that a lieutenant would have worn some type of emblem on his left sleeve? I purchased a WWII lt. uniform and it looks as if it has the outline of an emblem on the sleeve. Many thanks in advance for any response. Also, did the aviator wings pin go over the service ribbons or below?

Answer
An officer?  Not that I can think of.  On the blue jacket, there were gold stripes around the sleeves, and on the white 'choker', shoulder boards with the rank insignia.

Tell me more about this uniform.  Back in the 70s, enlisted wore officer-style uniforms which might explain a patch on the left sleeve, about midway between the elbow and shoulder.
