Military History/Father's Information

Good afternoon,  Here is some of my Dad's information:  Harold D. Horn, serial#:  35549114, PFC, Surgical Tech 861, Med Det 385th AAA BN, Normandy, N. France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, GO33&40 WD45.  It states he shipped on 29 Jan 44 from USA and arrived in Scottland 6 Feb 44.  Also states he left on 25 Nov 45 and arrived back in USA on 3 Dec 45.  I am trying to find out which division or any information that you have.  Thanks so much, Mark

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your question.  In it you typed "he shipped on 29 Jan 44 from USA and arrived in Scotland 6 Feb 44."

Departure Date:   January 29, 1944
Departure Location:   New York Port of Embarkation
Troop Ship:   RMS Aquitania
Arrival Date:   February 5, 1944
Arrival Location:   Gourock, Scotland
    7,634 Troops Onboard

(NOTE:  The RMS Aquitania arrived February 5, 1944 but your father arrived February 6, 1944.  The Aquitania unloaded by ferry,so unloading was a S-L-O-W process)

In your question you typed "he left on 25 Nov 45 and arrived back in USA on 3 Dec 45."  When I provide a troop ship name, it is after I have three sources of FACTS as per that voyage, one a Primary Source.  For your father's return to the USA in November/December 1945, I only have two sources of FACTS at this time. In the context of not being 100% sure, my OPINION is that the troop ship was the SS Madawaska Victory.
For additional FACTS about the 385th AAA Auto-Weapons Battalion, may I suggest that you try to obtain a unit history, published in 1974.  Apparently a Mr. Hyman Dubin put the unit history together for a 30 year unit re-union.  If you are able to find a copy please obtain two copies.  I will be happy to take one copy off your hands.
       Good Luck with your quest.

Can answer: World War Two. Specifically, the troop transport ships that took US Military Personnel overseas & returned them to the US, 1941-47. Also, unit history of US Army QM, Signal, MP, Ordnance, Medical, Transportation & Engineer units that served during WW 2. The more obscure units are my specialty. If you have the APO that a Veteran sent letters from or received letters at, I can look up the history of that APO.
