This handsome American, appears to be wearing a Greek military uniform.  I cannot find a photo of a Greek cap with the white tassel, although it is used on the great uniform worn by the general -on his belly,  in the middle of this  important site.

The white tassel maybe part of a unit, or a special duty, and needs to be researched further.  The hat, the blurry cockade emblem, and the importance of putting the tassel on such a hat are very Greek.

You say he was in the US military. Are you sure of the year of the picture??  It is possible he served for Greece before he came to America, making him a good candidate for the US Military, -just like today.  He could have also transferred temporarily when in Europe, or is simply trying on a friends uniform for the picture.  Like putting on a historic Greek soldiers tunic.  (maybe his friend tried on his US uniform and they took his picture too).  I know that in WWI and WWII our US soldiers that spoke the native languages in Europe where extremely important to the campaigns in each country.  (I am both of Greek and Italian origin).

Here is a few pictures of a full Greek military dress uniform: the great uniform (notice the 3 brass buttons on the sleeve).

It is difficult to tell as there is no color shift in the photo for the shoulder  on the shoulder, so it is probably plain Army or National Guard / Federal Police (called Gendarmerie)  whatever is the most plain.  Again

As per http://www.thefullwiki.org/Greek_Army_uniforms

He has 2 silver flowers on his shoulder which makes him a 1st LT.  as per WWII posting on http://postimg.org/image/myj9bl0x7/

Which I found on this forum for WWII UK people, one of them has a nice book.

He is not wearing dress uniform pants, simple khaki, no piping or anything to denote a dress pant.

The badge on his cap is either brass or embroidery.

I would think that a book with uniforms could be had through a local library system, military related library, or a Greek Society group.  Similar to what the WWII UK guy has.
