Military History/Deaths at Battle of the Bulge

I recounted for my students today the Battle of the Bulge and its significance.  I also gave them the commonly accepted statistics in terms of deaths, wounded, captured and MIA.  One of my students was curious, given the harsh environment in which the battle was fought, how many of those 19,000+ deaths were the result of environmental conditions rather than enemy bullets.  I did not know the answer and was hesitant to offer a guess.  I told the student I would find out the answer and get back with her.  Can you help me with this statistic?  How many American deaths can be attributed to the environment conditions?  Thanks, Jim Griffin

Hi Jim,
About 1300 died for reasons other than combat. That can be disease, natural deaths, accidents, suicides, exposure to the cold etc. There is no break down of the exact reasons. Most cases of frost bite lead to lost limbs but not deaths. About a 1/4 of the 47,000 non-fatal casualties were from the cold. Artillery was biggest killer in the battle. Many of the 23,000 captured or missing were killed by artillery. One shell kills you, then another covers up the body. Bodies have been found as recently as 2001. Feel free to ask follow ups.
