Military History/judge advocate?

During the Indian wars would any Army office be qualified to act as Judge advocate in a military trial, or would he have been trained such as the JAG Corps of todays army.

Dear John,
The Staff Judge Advocates Bureau had a total of 6-8 officers assigned after the Civil War. Their legal expertise became crucial to courts of inquiry at this time. Type in your search engine the following:

*Civil War Era Correspondence Of The Judge Advocate General: Letters Received, 1854-1870

*The Judge Advocate General Volume 1, Number 1 Dated 15 June 1944
