Military History/My great uncle's WWI service

My great uncle, Henry Kelm, was born in Germany in 1891.  He died in Wisconsin in 1971.  His gravestone reads, ôWisconsin, Pfc Co A 5 Fld Signal Bn, WWI.ö

Is there some way I can find out more about him, particularly his military service?

Family legend has it that he served in the German Military prior to immigrating to the US, but no one knows for certain.

Thank you in advance.

He was a private first class company A of the 5th field signal battalion.

You can request his service record.

Youngest who served in German Army was 17.
He could have served prior to WW1.
Here are some references to look.
