Question
What are the advantages and disadvantages of invading japan instead of dropping the atom bomb during ww2?

Answer

 Dear John

From a purely military point of view i cannot offer any advantages that an invasion would benefit the US. The losses would have been astronomical as well as the size and logistics of all the forces involved. Keep in mind that if the invasion would have been successful, the cost of staying in Japan would be too much to bear of the US since it was the only country with a still functioning economy at that time. There was no possible way that the US could have had forces stationed in Europe and then in Japan as well. Therefore it was decided to drop two bombs instead of one to ensure total capitulation of the Japanese. As you might know that the surrender was based on a single condition, that the Japanese emperor would keep his status as the head of state.
