Question
Hi Bob...

A nice easy one for you this time:

1/ What exactly is a "General" in the army? Is it short for a "general officer", or someone who is on the "general staff"...what exactly does it mean to be be a general? Is there a formal definition?

Also,

2/ How many Generals are there in the British Army?
3/ How many Generals are there in the US Army?

Thanks

Answer
Dear Paul,
The term general is used in two ways: as the generic title for all grades of general officers and as a specific rank. There are 40 U.S. generals and 10 British generals in August, 2014. May God Bless-Colonel Robert A. Lynn, Florida Guard
