Question
LTC Lynn:

Good Afternoon.

I am assembling a framed tribute for my father-in-law, but I am in need of information to do so.

My father-in-law's unit was Battery B, 635th AAA AW Bn, assigned to the 75th Infantry Division, Third Army. Dates of service are May 1943 to Nov 1945.  His MOS was MACHINE GUNNER -606.
I am trying to decipher weapons qualifications which are listed on his discharge papers as: MARKSMAN -2 EXPERT - 1 CL GUNNER.
Does the 1 CL Gunner indicate an EXPERT badge with a machine gun bar?
I have no idea what the Marksman badge is for. Could one be Rifle?

Also, in this display I would like to include a photo of AAA weapon he was assigned. I have determined the batteries utilized both Bofor 40mm guns and 50 cal machine guns. I am assuming he was assigned the 50 cal machine gun because of his MOS. Would I be correct?

Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Ed

Answer
Dear Ed,
Here's what I've been able to decipher:

In the World War II U.S. Army, there were the following badges-

*Marksman
*2nd Class Gunner
*Sharpshooter
*First Class Gunner
*Expert

A Marksman badge is for the rifle.

The machine gun would be the .50 caliber.
