Question
QUESTION: My father's Army personnel records show that from January - November 1946, he was a platoon officer of the following QM Truck Companies: 439, 644, 3800,4008, 3384, 3757, 3756. What was the role of these TCs post-war? I believe that he was in Germany. I recall him saying that his convoy was attacked, but I don't understand how that would be if the war was over. I'm trying to get a general understanding of his role so that I can include it in his obituary. Thank you.

ANSWER: Dear Ms.,
Thank you for your question.  In it you typed "My father's Army personnel records.......3384, 3757, 3756."  From my sources, the 439th, 644th & 3384th QM Truck Companies (TC) did, in fact, serve with the Army of Occupation, Germany, post-May 8, 1945.
In your question you typed "What was the role of these TCs post-war?"  Transporting Military Personnel, refugees, DPs (Displaces Persons) from one location to another, for either the US Military, Allied Military, or the United Nations.  Or, transporting food, clothing, building materials, etc, from one location to another, again for the same entities.
In your question you typed "I believe that he was in Germany."  You are correct, the Army of Occupation was in Germany, as well as Austria.
In your question you typed "I recall him saying that his convoy was attacked, but I don't understand how that would be if the war was over."  Organized hostilities ended on V-E Day, Tuesday, May 8, 1945.  However, one of two entities could have "attacked" your father's convoy after V-E Day.  One would have been DPs, trying to obtain what they needed to survive, or barter for other items to survive.  The Black Market was rampant in post-WW 2 Europe.
The other entity were termed "werewolves" [sic].  These were German youths (ex-Hitler Youth) who wished to continue to fight.  Attacking convoys did, to some degree, disrupt the Army of Occupation.  It also provided the werewolves with what they needed to survive in the rural areas of Germany, 1945-47.  Eventually the werewolves lost interest, but not before killing a number of Allied Military Personnel as well as United Nations Personnel.
Would you be so kind as to provide me with ALL THE DATES typed in Box #32 on page two of your father's Discharge Documents (WD AGO Form 53-96)?
You have my respects during this time of bereavement.

  Respectfully,
   Richard V. Horrell

Answer
Dear Ms.,
Thank you for your follow-up.  First, I must apologize for an error I made.  My request of you was for your father's "WD AGO Form 53-96".  The CORRECT request would have been for your father's WD AGO Form 53-98.  Again, my apology for the error, I am sorry.
The attached list of assignments with dates, title and station are clear & concise for me to read.  Your father has some career, especially his assignment to the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion!
       Good luck with your quest.

  Respectfully,
   Richard V. Horrell

Expertise

Can answer: World War Two. Specifically, the troop transport ships that took US Military Personnel overseas & returned them to the US, 1941-47. Also, unit history of US Army QM, Signal, MP, Ordnance, Medical, Transportation & Engineer units that served during WW 2. The more obscure units are my specialty. If you have the APO that a Veteran sent letters from or received letters at, I can look up the history of that APO.

Experience

A lifelong study of WW 2, including participation as a WW 2 Re-enactor, 1980-2002. Also, interviewing over 400 WW 2 Veterans about their role in WW 2.

AASLH, Middle Tennessee Genealogical Society

Over 800 Profiles that I have written for client's about their loved one's role in WW 2.
