QUESTION: I am looking for any info on my grandfathers time in the service as I have almost none. I recently received a copy of a certificate of merit awarded to him for the time 28th February to 5th March 1945. Do you have any info on what he might of been involved in at that time and also anything else or leads I could use to begin my research on him.
His name was Henry I. Globstad
Thanksfor any help you can give.

ANSWER: Dear sir,
Thank you for your question.  In it you typed "I recently received a copy of a certificate of merit awarded to him for the time 28th February to 5th March 1945."  Would you be so kind as to provide me with the source of the "certificate of merit" awarded to your grandfather?
In your question you typed "Do you have any info on what he might have been involved in at that time"?  No FACTS, what-so-ever.  You may wish to read:

In your question you typed "leads I could use to begin my research on him."  Of course the obvious, your grandfather's four page Discharge Documents (WD AGO Form 53-55).  In addition, the following FACTS are per the 771st Tank Battalion, NOT your grandfather:

Rhineland          September 15, 1944-March 21, 1945
Ardennes-Alsace    December 16, 1944-January 15, 1945

QUESTION: The certificate of merit for Henry I Globstad is from the European Theater of Operations US Army.It is for conspicuously meritorious and outstanding performance of military duties. It was  signed by A. R. Bolling Major General

Dear sir,
Thank you for your follow-up.  My apology for the poor wording of my question to you.  My desire was to learn from whom YOU obtained "a copy of a certificate of merit" in the 21st Century.
Major General Alexander R. Bolling was the Commanding Officer of the 84th Infantry Division while serving in the E.T.O., 1944-45.
From a roster I have of the 771st Tank Battalion, Corporal Henry I. Globstad (Union, Montana) was assigned (assigned) to Company D, 771st Tank Battalion & participated in the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace & Central Europe Campaigns in the E.T.O., 1944-45.
       Good Luck with your quest.

Can answer: World War Two. Specifically, the troop transport ships that took US Military Personnel overseas & returned them to the US, 1941-47. Also, unit history of US Army QM, Signal, MP, Ordnance, Medical, Transportation & Engineer units that served during WW 2. The more obscure units are my specialty. If you have the APO that a Veteran sent letters from or received letters at, I can look up the history of that APO.
