Question What does the role "ANCO" mean i have been told i need to speak to the ANCO but dont know what he does.
Answer hello Helen,
Here in the UK each school has a special educational needs coordinator but some are now called ancos or additional needs co coordinators.
This person is responsible for staff training and development so that all staff are well briefed to teach students who have the need for additional support for learning or behaviour.
The Anco/Senco ensures that the school provides individual education plans or personalised learning for all students whose support needs are significantly greater than the majority in the school.
The Anco will also meet with parents to discuss how to help a child make their best progress. Do get in touch with them and let them know you would like the special needs arrangements in the school explained.
The school should have a written policy for special needs which explains how support is organised and how the school monitors progress. If you can see the written policy before you meet to discuss your child it will help you decide what you need to ask.
It can be very upsetting to find out that your child needs extra help and some parents say that they are in shock and don't get a chance to find out what they need to know. Sometimes it can be good to take another member of the family or a friend who can help you find out what you need to know.
I do hope that your meeting goes well. Don't hestitate to ask questions. Write notes before you go if that will help you feel confident.
