Question Tuesday, October 30, 2001
Dear sir/mam
I write to you with the hope that you can solve my problem of time management , as I am now in a stage where time cannot be wasted
NOTE 1) sir, I request you to read the whole letter and thoroughly understand my problem ,and answer specifically to my questions
2) also , please do nor refer me to any web sites as it is an indirect way, I want to know your point of view after reading the letter ..
thank you
Allow me to explain
I am a civil engineering student
My college started in July, but I was admitted later , in the month of September
At that time about 50 % of the portion had been covered, and now about 90 %
At this stage I have not yet got down to serious studying ,
My exams will start in December
And at this stage the portion to be covered is very vast
I have 6 subjects (5 theory + 1 maths , which I hate)
I need your help regarding how to manage my existing time, till the exam
Given below are the time that I spend in one day
Traveling 2.5 hours
College from 8.45 am to 5.00 pm
Meals , I hours
Personal care 1 hour
With family about 1 hour
Now sir , after reading the above please tell me how to
Utililize the maximum possible time for studies
When I come from college , I am a bit tired and so watch television , (which ia a waste of time !)
Then it is 7.30 pm,, I do a little bit of home work and then I watch television at 8.30 pm, then food at 9.pm , after food, my efficiency is low and hence I study, ok
Not so good for the long term goal for the exam
Now since you know my entire schedule please can you guide me , so as to re arrange my time schedule so that I can study maximum in the existing schedule
Also “how many hours of sleep is required for a person of my age” ??
I am a weak student and what ever I study today is gone tommorow, so please also keep some “factor of safety “ in mind
I expect that after reading the details of time utilized you will help me to “RE PROGRAM” my time table , so that I can study to maximum
Thank you and have a nice day

Answer Hi Nitin,
I have gone through your question in detail.
I think you should do the following :
1* Divide each paper (5+1=6) into units - easy, difficult, very difficult
2* Pick up each paper one at a time and finish a specific unit.
3* Do not jump from one unit or paper to another
4* While studying, take down notes in points which you can revise later
5* Since you still have about a month to go, devote 5/6 days to each paper
6* If you particularly like any one subject and are familiar with it, devote less time to that and more days to maths
7* Keep in mind that diwali is coming, so keep 2 days aside for that.
8* Is it possible for you to stay close to your college, that way you can save 2.5 hrs
9* If a friend has made notes, take his/her help.
10* Cut down on your TV, family and personal grooming time as you have little time left for your exams. Even if you save 30 minutes in each it makes 1.5 hours.
11* Take a walk for 10 min each day after dinner and then get down to studying
12* You need around 6 hrs of sound sleep to keep you fresh
13* Best thing is to just relax and keep reminding yourself to study.
14* Make a time table and stick to it come what may.
15* If you can lay hands on old test (question) papers it will help.
I hope I have helped...please do send in your comments.
