Question
Hi, my female mouse gave birth about a week and a half ago. When can you determine what sex the babies are? I have looked for nipples on all of them, and it only looked like one had them, and I'm not even sure if it did. They are all pinkish white colored still and the only one that looked like it might have nipples was a black one. Any suggestions would be great.

Answer
Hi Heather,

Congrats on the new pinkies.  Unfortunately, it will be a few more weeks until you will be able to determine the sex of the pinkies.  I am not sure what you mean with the nipples but the absolutely only way to tell the sex is via the scrotum.  It is almost impossible to not know which ones are males and females by the sexual organs.  Males will start becoming large down there and their male area will keep on getting more and more large.

Sometimes males can be late bloomers and they will look like they are females for a long long time, but the scrotum will still become very large. The testicles are like a upside down M, plus the gap between the anus and the penis is larger than between the anus and the urethra.  If you could take pictures and send them to me of your baby rats I would be more than happy to try to sex them for you the best I could.

I hope this helps and good luck with your new babies!
Amber
