Organizations
Church, I am a Christian.

Education/Credentials
Have some college course on engines, working on them and keeping them repaired. Read a lot of books and try to stay ahead of things.

Mitsubishi Repair - Small Evap Leak

Expert: Linda - 5/20/2009

Question
I have been getting a small EVAP leak in my 96 galant for a while now.  I bought a new gas cap and that doesn't seem to work.  The CE light will sometimes go off by itself, or stay off a while if I clear the code.  It seems to come on when I let the tank get below 1/4 full.  How can I fix the problem, and if I took it somewhere, would it cost me a fortune if I take it somewhere?

Answer
Matt: I would say that your fuel pump is getting weak and you will need to replace that. There is an easy test to make sure you are getting enough pressure from it. But if you want to do work on your own car, you need to buy yourself a repair manual for the car. Most parts stores have them, they cost around $20.00 and well worth the money. Did you know running your car down below 1/4 of a tank is very hard on that fuel pump. The fuel is what keeps the pump cool. If you do that to much with time you will cook the fuel pump. We have been replacing a lot of fuel pumps of late well more then the cost of fuel was so high. Because people where trying to get all they could out of that fuel. I would also code the computer to see what it might kick out at you besides the EVAP. Still have the test to check the pressure well how much pressure your car's fuel pump is putting out. With the repair manual you can find where that is, know the right number and do it yourself. God bless: Linda
