AboutAnthony Falcone Expertise I have been working with (and driving) a first generation Mitsubishi Eclipse for several years. Anything that could go wrong with an Eclipse has probably happened on mine. Fortunately, I have gained a lot of knowledge from experience in repairing these problems myself.

Hey,
I have a 2001 Diamante with the same problem. What that is called when its locked into secondd gear is called SAFE MODE. To prevent damage to the tranny. You can drive the car from 1-40 Before your RPM makes it to redline. If you place the car in neutral while moving about 20mph then turn it off an start it then punch the gas it will shift every gear while your foots on the floor.. Let off then pop safe mode.
I paid the $2700 an rebuilt my tranny just to have the same problem. What happens is that Diamante is also famous for bad heater core O-Rings which begin to leak right into the ( TCU ) And there is the Diamante Transmition Ghost Is.
Replace TCU and your golden. Just check the small relays beside it for damage from heater core rings leaking....
