The same thing happened to me and it was only a relay switch. It took the mechanic 5 minutes to fix it.

Check for part number MB151298 which is a small rubber stopper that goes under the pedal and keeps the brake lights off when not in use. $5.00 and easy to install

I had the same problem: Brake lights came on and drained the battery while I was out of town. I found pieces of the brake-pedal (blue) rubber stopper on the carpet in front of the driver's seat. The rubber hardens over time and fractures. I removed the brake-light switch connector and the switch, and tested the switch. It worked as designed: Brake lights on with the switch plunger extended, and lights off with the plunger depressed. If cruise control is installed, the switch also provides a signal to the cruise control system. Doc's solution worked for me. I purchased MB151298 ("rubber stopper", though it doesn't actually "stop" anything; part ID current as of Oct2013) from a local Mitsubishi dealer and replaced it. I used a bit of silicone grease to make it easier to install the stopper at the top of the brake pedal lever.

I have done a lot of work on older Mitsubishi's. Whatever has gone on with someone's car has I am sure happen to the one I work on. A lot of things, though might be the computer it could be a sensor too. Whatever I am not sure of, I will then hunt up the question useing the net. Don't know much about body work or painting a car.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse I work on has over 167,000 miles on it. If it could go wrong it has. I have learned a lot from working on the car, reading books and asking people who work on other cars.

Church, I am a Christian.

Have some college course on engines, working on them and keeping them repaired. Read a lot of books and try to stay ahead of things.
